Regular Holiday vs Special Non-Working Day

In the Philippines, public holidays fall into two distinct legal categories with different pay rules:

  • Regular Holiday (e.g. New Year, Maundy Thursday, Independence Day, Christmas): 100% pay if unworked; 200% pay if worked (first 8 hrs); 260% if worked on rest day.
  • Special Non-Working Day (e.g. Ninoy Aquino Day, All Saints' Day): 'No work, no pay' if unworked; 130% pay if worked (first 8 hrs); 150% if worked on rest day.

Questions people ask next

What if a regular holiday falls on my rest day?

If unworked, you receive 100% regular holiday pay. If worked, you receive 260% of your regular daily wage for the first 8 hours.

What happens if two regular holidays fall on the exact same date?

Under DOLE rules, a Double Regular Holiday (such as Araw ng Kagitingan and Maundy Thursday falling on the same day) entitles unworked employees to 200% pay, and worked employees to 300% pay (390% if on a rest day).
